Herndon, VA – The American Latino Veterans Association (ALVA) is pleased to commemorate Women Veterans Appreciation Day (also known as Women Veterans Recognition Day). June 12th marks the passage of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act of 1948. This provides an opportunity to recognize the essential and courageous service provided by women in military service throughout the history of the United States.

In keeping with the intent of the day, ALVA honors the invaluable service of the brave women who have served our military over the centuries. With that in mind, ALVA highlights one such brave veteran who turned 100 years old this year. Born in Puerto Rico in February 1922, Carmen Vazquez was raised by a single mom and enlisted in the Army during World War II to serve as a nurse. She re-enlisted during the Korean Conflict in 1953, once again as a nurse but this time with the Air Force and was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. After the war she remained in the reserves for another 20 years before retiring in 1973. Earlier this year, Lt. Vazquez was honored with a recognition included in the Congressional record: https://www.congress.gov/117/crec/2022/03/09/168/42/modified/CREC-2022-03-09-pt1-PgE237-3.htm
